Google Marketing Live 2026 Recap: Changing the Google Ads Playbook

Google Ads

Google Marketing Live 2026 wasn’t really about new features in Google advertising. It was about who, or what, pushes the buttons in Google Ads going forward. The keynote leaned almost entirely into AI, automated bidding, automated creative, automated measurement, and it landed the same week Google confirmed AI Mode had crossed 1 billion monthly active users, on top of AI Overviews continuing to reshape what standard search results look like. AI search isn’t a side experiment anymore, it’s core to how Google expects people to search, shop, and find businesses like yours.

For a business owner or marketer trying to figure out what to do with this, here’s the short version: Google is automating execution. The buttons you used to push get replaced by AI. What becomes more important is your strategy.

What Was Announced

Google’s annual advertising keynote focused almost entirely on Google AI, and specifically on tools that now span Google Ads, Google Analytics, Google Search, and the wider Google Marketing Platform as one connected system instead of separate tools. One of the keynote’s sessions, “The Gemini Advantage,” focused specifically on how Gemini-powered tools are meant to improve marketing performance across the board. The announcements broke down into a few categories:

  • An AI assistant that surfaces recommendations across your accounts
  • Natural language tools for guiding campaigns and creative
  • Upgrades to how shopping and commerce work inside Google
  • New ad formats built for AI Mode and conversational search
  • New measurement tools built to show the value AI-driven campaigns actually produce.

None of it replaces the need for a marketing strategy. It just changes what that strategy has to define.

Ask Advisor Puts Your Account Data In One Place

Ask Advisor is an always-on AI assistant that pulls insights from your ads, analytics, and commerce data and surfaces recommendations without anyone having to dig through separate reports by hand. For us, that means less time spent manually pulling data together and more time spent turning what your account is telling us into an actual next move for your business, without losing sight of the customer relationships underneath all that data.

AI Max And AI Brief Change How You Give Instructions

AI Max is built around a simple idea: we set the goals and the guardrails on your behalf, your brand voice, audience priorities, and brand guidelines, and Google’s AI handles the execution underneath that. Once those guardrails are set, AI Max now spans Google Ads, Google Analytics, Google Marketing Platform, and Google Merchant Center in one workflow, feeding Smart Bidding, Performance Max, shopping campaigns, and Demand Gen campaigns from the same set of goals instead of managing each one separately.

AI Brief is the cherry on top. Instead of adjusting a dozen individual settings, we can guide AI Max and shape creative strategy in plain language, and test it against your account’s current setup before committing any of your budget to it. Google built this specifically because consumer search behavior is shifting toward longer, more conversational queries, and search campaigns increasingly need to respond to that shift in real time rather than through static keyword lists.

Asset Studio Cuts Down Creative Production Time

Asset Studio uses Gemini to generate ad images and video from simple written descriptions, so a business doesn’t need a full in-house creative team just to keep campaigns fresh. The most useful addition here is a one-click testing flow that lets you compare new AI-generated creative assets against your current top performers before committing budget to them, instead of guessing which version will actually work.

The output still needs a human eye. AI Max and Asset Studio are both built to stay inside whatever guardrails and brand guidelines we’ve set for your account, but we still review everything before it goes live, that’s not a step we’re willing to automate away.

Smart Bidding And Shopping Ads Get More Signal To Work With

Smart Bidding now factors in more granular signals, including Product Value Adjustments, which let a bidding algorithm weigh conversion values by actual product margin or inventory instead of treating every sale the same. That matters most for AI-powered shopping ads and Demand Gen ads, where the algorithm needs real data attributes to capture demand accurately rather than just optimizing for clicks.

Universal Cart And The Universal Commerce Protocol Bring Checkout Into Google

Google introduced the Universal Commerce Protocol, an open standard meant to connect shopping experiences across the Google ecosystem, spanning Search, YouTube, and Gmail into one system. The Universal Cart is the customer-facing result: someone can add products from any of those surfaces into a single cart and check out with Google Pay without ever leaving Google.

For retailers, that raises the importance of Google Merchant Center and keeping product feeds accurate. Clean data attributes in your Merchant Center feed are what let these more conversational shopping experiences surface the right product at the right moment.

YouTube And Demand Gen Get New Ways To Prove Their Worth

Google announced that YouTube now reaches over 90% of US adults and shows up somewhere in 89% of purchase journeys, which is part of why Demand Gen campaigns are getting more tools built specifically around video. Affiliate Partnerships Boost lets you boost organic creator partnership videos directly inside a campaign instead of only running paid creative. View-Through Conversion optimization is now available for Demand Gen too, which matters because a lot of YouTube-driven conversions happen after someone watches a video, not after they click one. Demand Gen is also expanding to include Google Maps as a placement, useful for any business where a nearby search turns into a walk-in visit.

Campaign Type Attribution is the measurement side of this shift, it isolates how much of a conversion Demand Gen specifically contributed, rather than lumping it in with Search or Performance Max. Demand Gen Uplift Experiments go a step further, running an actual A/B test to show the incremental lift Demand Gen adds on top of your other campaigns, so YouTube’s contribution stops being a guess.

Meridian Moves Into Analytics 360

Meridian, Google’s marketing mix modeling tool, is now built directly into a redesigned Google Analytics 360, and it pulls in cross-channel data from platforms like TikTok, Pinterest, Reddit, Snap, and Meta, not just Google’s own properties. That’s a shift for measurement, it means a business can look at true media performance across its full marketing mix in one place instead of stitching together reports from five different platforms.

Two new metrics came with it:

  • Qualified Future Conversions uses Gemini to predict conversion value up to six months out, based on signals like branded searches and engaged site visits after someone sees an ad, which helps justify upper-funnel spend that wouldn’t show results in a standard 30-day window.
  • Missed Opportunity Reporting is similar but, it shows where a budget cap is quietly costing you conversions you could have had.

For businesses that want to test causality directly, Meridian GeoX offers a more accessible version of geo-based incrementality testing, comparing regions to see whether a campaign is actually driving sales that wouldn’t have happened anyway.

What Actually Gets Easier, And What Gets More Important

Building campaigns, producing creative, and adjusting bids are all more automated now. That’s the part that gets easier. What gets more valuable is your strategy, your data quality, and knowing what instructions to give the AI in the first place. In performance marketing, and in digital marketing generally, that’s where the real competitive advantage comes from now, not from who has access to the newest tool, since every business running Google Ads has access to the same AI Max and Asset Studio.

Turning on these AI tools is not a strategy by itself. Without clear goals, clean first-party data, and someone actually reviewing what the AI decides, automation can just as easily misread priorities or waste paid media budget as it can save you time.

What To Do About It Right Now

Your first-party data and conversion tracking need to be in order, since the AI is only as good as what it’s fed. This is something we handle directly, using tools like Google Tag Gateway and the Data Manager API to route tags and first-party data through the server instead of the browser, which strengthens data quality and signal reliability across every campaign we run for you.

Your goals and guardrails need to be defined clearly, not left as a handful of manual toggles. This is where we lean on you the most, we need to understand your priorities, your brand voice, and what you’re trying to achieve, so we can translate that into instructions AI Max and AI Brief can act on accurately.

Someone still needs to be reviewing the output. That’s us. We monitor performance, sanity check what the AI recommends, and adjust strategy when something looks off, so none of it runs completely hands-off, on our end or yours.

How JELY Approaches This Shift

We’ve always believed human judgment is the actual product, not button-pushing. Google automating more of the execution doesn’t change that, it just moves where our attention goes. Less time on manual settings, more time on strategy, creative direction, and making sure the AI is actually working toward your business goals instead of its own defaults.

With tools like AI Max making more decisions on their own, we stay in the driver’s seat so you don’t have to micromanage a Google Ads account. You’re still the navigator, pointing us toward where your business needs to go. We handle the execution, and we make sure the machine is actually working for you, not just running on autopilot.

If you want a Google Ads partner steering this shift alongside you instead of just switching on the automation and hoping for the best, we’re ready to talk. Request a Quote or View Our Services to get started.
